rethinking the fringe

31 Aug

To go or not to go… tis my ambivalence

embededskull-copy.jpg

Since 1995 I have been going up to San Francisco to attend the annual Fringe Festival . This was even before the Rogue was a glimmer in anyone’s eye. I treated it as my “creative rejuvenation weekend” and would wait in anticipation for at least a month counting the days. When the day finally arrived I would drive or train up and have a glorious long weekend taking it all in.

Then, we started the Rogue… and those sojourns up to the festival became a working vacation. The difference being (apart from checking out and stumping for acts) that now there was a small gang that went up with me. The trips now also included group shenanigans that always added more spicy fun and entertainment to the trip.

This year however I have mixed feelings about going… actually more like ambivalence. I am always creatively renewed by the trip… and this year more than most I sorely need the break… but it’s 2 weeks away (I can get a great deal at a hotel plus one of my favorite theatre groups is performing) but I’m just not feeling it at the moment.

Da Count – from whence we came

30 Aug

dacount

Today Malaysia celebrates “medeka” – it’s 50th year as an independent nation. Before that for about 400 years it was a colony under the Portuguese, Dutch and British who first ambled to that region of the world because of the spice trade. I am proud to say that I belong to the first generation of “medeka” children.

You have already read some accounts of my upbringing on this as well as the other two versions of this blog. I am glad and feel fortunate I came from whence I did. I wouldn’t be this present self if I didn’t Now I realize many have come from more challenging and unfortunate backgrounds. The point being… we are here now. Where we came from and the circumstances of our upbringing gave all of us a start. And no matter what… we muddled through to who we are and where we are now. I think that is worth counting.

meme catch-up

29 Aug

Over the last couple of weeks I have been tagged by a couple of gorgeous bloggers on some memes. So here goes…

The first one came from the lovely Tish called THE SEVEN P’s.

Passion - Any and everything that I have chosen to throw my hat into… mostly the work I do that is of a creative nature.

PurposeTo try… I consider the only failure is not to.

Pursuit - Excellence & Honesty… whether it be in the personal or professional parts of my life.

PositionA constant state of flux and change guided by some simple principles to keep me on the straight and narrow.’

PummelingMyself, when I fail to keep promises to myself or others… including being tardy.

ProgressA constant ambition. I may not be the fastest… but I do deliver the goods.

Personalityloyal, honest, ambitious, fun, quirky, reliable, creative (some claim a little insane), passionate and continually in wonder about all the new things I learn everyday.

Oh yeah… I’m suppose to tag 7 others! OK… YOU… yes, you… consider yourself tagged.

Another meme to come later in the day.

Whoa!

29 Aug

heat.gif

The next 2 days is going to hit 105 F (40 C) with 60 percent humidity!!! What in the George Roy Hill is going on here? Really, those are ridiculous numbers. I think that will officially define… sweltering.

On to other things…

Taking sides… I’m known to be hard pressed to capitulate to pressure from most quarters in this area. This is one of the reasons I do not subscribe to any institutionalized political leaning. Mainly because I truly feel that situations should be dealt with on their own merit instead of being dictated by a general sweeping dogma of the party line.

Whether an individual or group has made a right or wrong decision for something or another (in my personal or professional life) does not negate their worth. Even if those mistakes come in a constant stream. Mistakes are part and parcel of this journey called life and can be a great learning experience. In my humble observations many of those mistakes come about as a result of absolute thinking anyway. Besides, I like to think that the practice of “taking sides” and the socially ostracizing an individual is something I left in the playgrounds of my juvenile years.

Now, before you jump on my case for being all “touchy feely”… there are exceptions to the rule. Unless an individual or group has plotted and carried our death and destruction… I will give them the benefit of the doubt. Afterall… who am I to judge?

so, I’m done…

28 Aug

… watching this.
Rome Season 1
I got it last week (at half the listed price) and was really good about only watching 2 episodes a day… OK… there was that one night I watched 3… but the point is I spaced them out. Now I want to go out and get this.
rome_season_2.jpg
Anyone out there have a Costco card I can use? My review? I want to buy the second season. don’t I? 2 words… compelling and spectacular. I can see how continuing past the second season would have been prohibitive cost-wise. In a way, perhaps it’s best to leave them screaming for more.

That marked the first DVD I have bought in over 8 months. I don’t buy that many anymore as there are other means of owning a copy.

Last night as I rode around my neighborhood I was struck by the Summer smells of the big NO… mainly the aroma of barbecue. My sense of smell is pretty acute to where I can identify the meat that is being grilled… and possibly a couple of the ingredients of the marinade. Perhaps that will be an Olympic sport someday.

More as the day wears on…

EDIT: 11:25 PM

Dang! I have to say the dust levels in the big NO is just unreal! Mind you this is indoors! This is the second time in 2 months that I have cleaned out the air-conditioning filter just so it doesn’t have to work too hard to cool the place. Believe me it makes a difference… a HUGE difference. I guess I’ll also have to do a “big blow” on the computers since they are in the same room. BTW… if you live here a can of compressed air is your friend… that is of course only if you care about your computer working properly and not fritzing out on you. Ya really want to keep the dust levels in there down to a minimum.

and it goes…

27 Aug

So, I think I’m joining the “I Reply” movement (yeah, click the graphic) which I originally found on a post by SeaRabbit. This relates to comments to my blog posts. I have to admit that I have been sporadic at best in the reply department… I hope to improve on this. With this new move of the blog I can use the “edit comment” function to individualize my replies (mine will be the ones that are bold and italicized) . The only exception being HNT posts (30 odd “thank you’s” seems just a little redundant) which I will reply to all in a single comment. Now, that being said… I will attempt my replies at least within 48 hours from when your comments are posted. Afterall… part of the fun and function of blogging is the interactive nature of it all.

ireply

And next…

It’s been bloody humid in the NO of late. There have been mornings when I’ve opened my door just to be hit by a wall of heavy air. Yeah, it sort of reminds me from whence I originally came … just without the jungle, street food, etc. So, I think it really needs to get back to being a “dry heat” because… well… it’s not from whence I came… It’s da (dry heat) NO, dammit!

And next…

Speaking of “from whence I came”… Frogway is now in the middle of it’s run. I’ve compiled some more blog responses/reviews over on the Frog Blog… some even with pictures! So far, folks seem to like it. I really am looking forward to watching the video and possible touring plans.

And next…

I just may (I said… MAY) edit a new Vlog soon. But my focus on this week is to get my vehicle back up and legal.

So much for now. Hope your start to the week is a good one! Cheers!

a possum kept me up last night

26 Aug

possum2_lg.JPG

Not this particular one… but one just like it. It decided to sit on the fence and my dogs went all nuts that it was there. OK… it was my dogs that woke me up barking at Mr. Possum. So, at 2 AM I got the dogs to another side of the backyard so that said possum could waddle elsewhere. No, possum stayed put. This went on and on and at intermittent times the dogs would return to the fence and bark at the possum who would growl and hiss back. I would have to wake up… calm down the dogs and get them to the other part of the yard. Go over to the fence sitting possum to tell him the plan.

“Possum dude, I’ll keep them away for half an hour… in that time, you go somewhere else. You’ll be happier that they are not harassing you and I can get some sleep.”

No, he stays! This went on all bloody night. Then at about 7ish… possum decided to make it’s way elsewhere. Couldn’t it have done that smart move 5 hours earlier?

Now, I sort of enjoy the fact that there is still some wildlife where I live. On occasion there is the odd hawk that will pull apart a bird kill on the tree in front of my house showering feathers down as it does. The squirrels around here rule the trees and possums make visits once in a while. I respect their right and appreciate their presence… you know… that whole “shared spaces” thing. However, last night… if I actually owned a firearm I would have seriously considered the possibility of using it.

a few of those invited…

24 Aug

… came by for the “opening night party for Frogway” last night. An intimate crowd for sure but a fun one nevertheless. They even brought snackies! Yum! Suicide Lounge provided the entertainment and the entire evening proved to be a pleasant distraction for all concerned. I did speak to Mike right after via Skype and he seemed quite pleased with how the first night went. There will be more news stories and blog reactions to the show as the run continues over on the Frog Blog. If you came by last night at Da Chat… I apologize for not being around… it goes that way sometimes.

and…

Rogue Year Round continues tonight at Ashtree Studios and on Sunday over at the Starline. So, if you happen to be in da big NO… catch these shows!

and…

Yes, it is true that I invite people over just so I will clean up the place.

so…

Let’s see what adventures are in store for this weekend. Hoping yours are all pleasant ones.
