so, the bank called & emailed me today…

31 Mar

lampos.jpg … to inform me of suspicious activity on my debit card. So I get online and check my account and yes, there is some charge from yahoo mail that I know nothing of. (Once cleared I can file a claim for that via phone.) I call the bank and they tell me that someone tried to buy goodies from Overstock.com to the tune of $1,500!! Of course it was declined. (I never have more than what to pay the bills with and a little spending money in my checking… a lesson I learned a long time ago.) (Whew!) They promptly cancel my card and will be sending a new one in the mail.

Here is the kicker… no more than 20 minutes elapsed between the transactions and them informing me. Howzat for service? So glad their cyber detectives were vigilantly on the prowl. I really never thought the day would arrive when the banking industry would give me a serious case of the warm fuzzies.

Didn’t get a lot of sleep last night as I was editing a video for a client. OK… some of you know that I do have a propensity for absurd challenges. Well, this was one. Friends of mine (an artist and a musician who are married) did a joint project a few years ago. A collaborative piece involving music and painting. This was then presented at Rogue 2004 or 2005. Neat… right?

Yeah, well they asked me if I could package them together in digital format. Sure… no problem. I could have created a web styled file that included each of the pieces as a joint presentation… I’ve actually done it before. But… NOOOO! I open my trap and said I would create a DVD of the project! OK… so, I’ve done my share of creative slideshows in video format but those involved several different pictures that I could string together. This project involved 5 pieces of music each connected to 5 different paintings.

So, one painting is on the screen while a 2 to 5 minute piece of music connected to the art is playing. Hmmmm… how so I make this interesting? Added to this was my own demand that each one have it’s own motif and feel. (I know… what a totally idiotic fucktard thing to attempt, huh?) Anyhoo, to make a long story short… I started at 1 PM yesterday and completed the project at 10 AM this morning. How did they turn out? Some of the pieces are better than others… but I’m just pleased for the accomplishment. Now, I really want a beer or 5 (how very blue collar of me)… but there are other clients waiting in line for completion of their projects. Oh, will you get to see the finish works? Perhaps… if you really nice to me ::wink::

Well, that’s it from this nuthouse. Hope your week starts well and ends better. Oh yeah… and I actually replied to comments in the last 2 posts.

… and then I awoke at 4:30 AM…

30 Mar

… but I had counted on that as I had turned in early the night before. Yeah, some weekend nights I do like doing that just to wake the next day to the dark of the morning. There is a certain solace in the still hours just before the dawn that I quite enjoy.

bladerunner.jpg

On a shopping trip Friday I picked up the DVD of “Blade Runner“… even though I already owned the “director’s cut” that was released a few years ago. It is one of those movies that people either love or hate (I am of the former ilk) and spawns endless discussions and debates (like “Is Deckard a replicant?”) but even today can still amaze on visual richness alone. (Really, this particular transfer is stunningly gorgeous.) This DVD includes 3 previous versions plus the “final cut” as well as 2 discs of extras that totally tickled my nerd gene. So after I got through the 2 discs of extras I popped in the “final cut” version and took it all in.

The true test of time for any piece in my humble estimation is finding something new or the rediscovery of a theme that is as relevant today as when it was first released. The various versions and cuts not withstanding, the themes of being human and living life fully once more reared itself across in bold 40 foot high letters. It certainly got my noggin cranking though it has been a subject that has flitted across my encasement of grey matter time and again.

In this instance, it got me contemplating the “BS factor”. We all have a quotient of it… or at least remnants of one that was slapped together when we were younger. (One can only hope that as life rolls on we shed more of it in an effort to become more authentic.) This (BS Factor) is something that can manifest itself in many forms. It was (is) usually pulled out in an attempt to boost our esteem in some social setting… often taking the form of some badly disguised boast to impress company. It could also manifest itself as some sort of weird romanticized self depreciation in order to illicit sympathy. Whatever it’s form, it was (is) pulled out to train focus of the spotlight momentarily onto ourselves.

The questions that I have been contemplating in that vein include:

  • How much of our BS factor have we held on to from our teenage years?
  • Do we shed our BS factor as we get older or do we create newer editions and collect more to store as time rolls on?
  • Does continual spewing of our BS eventually make it true?
  • How many of us believe our own BS.. and are actually convinced that it defines us?
  • Does holding on to our BS impede our ability to live life to it’s fullest?

Yeah, heady questions but ones that usually happen at 4:30 AM for me.

Da Count – cheap ice cream

27 Mar

dacountI took a bike ride earlier this evening around my neighborhood. It’s something I usually do mid-late morning when there is hardly anyone around. But I was a tad busy this morning… so early evening it was. It’s very different in the evenings around here. People walking their critters, couples strolling, joggers… well, jogging and folks like me on bikes slowly rolling along. It’s a pretty neighborhood with trees and older homes so it’s a bit of a routine for the folks who live here to leave their homes for a bit to enjoy the area.

icecream.jpg As I was riding along I came by a convenience store and bought two carnation ice-cream sandwiches. (One for Mum and the other for me.) Truth be told… I loves me some ice cream. Always have. However, since becoming lactose intolerant I do have to watch my intake. Everything hinges on the day and my body chemistry.

Now sure there are all sorts of wonderful ice creams out there… and I’ve tasted (gobbled) a fair share of them before being struck down by this malady. Problem is most of them are made out of real milk and cream. That is a huge zappo factor for me. However, about a year ago I discovered that the cheap more commercial and economically priced brands I can tolerate. (Made with milk flavored products…mmm) So, every once in a while (still can’t do it too often) like today I decided to treat myself.

It’s been about an hour since I gobbled that ice cream and I’m still alive with no dire effects. I so do enjoy these good body chemistry days. The neat thing about an ice cream sandwich or drumstick is that it reminds me of my younger days when the ice cream man would roll down my old neighborhood street ringing his bell. So, cheap ice cream is worth the count today in more ways than one.

the post I was going to write… (with edit)… plus HNT

26 Mar

… may be up later in the day. Thank you to those who voted… and if you haven’t yet… see the post below.

EDIT: 3:20 PM

I have decided not to take my allergy meds today. So far so good… and I am lucid! Just got tired of being zombified, ya know?

Been a little involved over the last couple of days with new software, etc – geeky stuff. Used to be that I would engage in the world of geekdom just for the sake of it. Now it has become the tools of my (fledgling) trade. Problem with software is they keep upgrading it. Look, I’m all about improvements but sometimes I feel that it’s a bit of a scam… especially when there are upgrades every six months that you have to pay for. I have visions of software developers sitting in a jacuzzi (years after the completion of the definitive version of a product) looking at the calendar then saying “OK… time to release version 5.2!” Then laughing maniacally, “And they’ll pay for every upgrade until version 50!”

OK… I’ll admit there is a streak of envy about that. I just dream about creating something that will pay the bills for the rest of my life, don’t you?

Anyway, back to geekopolis. Have a great hump day!

TIME WASTER ALERT!

Found through The Presurfer site… The Last Supper of just about every stripe.

EDIT: HNT

This was another leftover (may even be a rerun) that I came across… this time in black & white. And yeah… sometimes I do feel like this.

Cheers & Happy HNT!

so, it was only last night…

25 Mar

pollenmixb.jpg

… I discover that this blog or I are up for a “famous choice award“! (If you go there look to the far right sidebar and click the “Blog” category… oh, and the added quirk is the voting thingy only seems to work in IE.) Anyway, for someone who didn’t know about it… it was not a bad showing. But now that I’m aware of it… I want my showing to be better. I’m not exactly an awards kinda guy (yeah, like I really expect to win) but I am competitive and just want a decent showing in this horse race. I think voting ends at the end of this week. So, in this wacky election season… help my showing be a little more respectable, will ya? BTW… Suicide Lounge is nominated under “Bands”… do them the favor too, woncha?

Boy, the pollen was flying thick yesterday. Yeah, tis the season and all, but I actually had to resort to meds because of it. Not my favorite of things to do. Sure, it does provide relief but it also gets me all zoney and a little cranky. Not exactly a copasetic canopy to be creative under. I expect the pollen levels to be about the same today so I’ll have to engage the same means to remedy that. So far I’ve been holding off… at least until this post is done. Really, one would think that with all the sub-divisions that are overtaking the farm land around these parts the pollen levels would decrease.

To compensate for the attack of the dreaded pollen I did plunge into some retail therapy with APJ yesterday. (Yes, yes… I went to the store with her… but not in that way… she’s in high preparation for her own impending store adventures at present.) It was felt that a run to Big Lots would help my fuzzy demeanor unfuzz a little. So, what came out of it? I only bought what I needed. That’s how far gone I was. ::sigh::

Oh, from this point on I will be replying to comments made on this blog when the spirit moves me. I really do appreciate the comments and am usually moved to reply to them… but sometimes it may take a day or two. And sometimes not every comment really needs a reply. So, what I am saying is that my replies will be sporadic and selective for the most part.

O K… ::chimes:: medication time. Perhaps more will come later in a zoney state.

EDIT: Make time for this if you live in the Big No!

well, a new week begins…

24 Mar

… and I hope you all had a good Easter. Mine was OK. Cooked, ate and sat around feeling restless but not wanting to do anything to remedy it. Hopefully today will be filled with more achievement inducing tasks.

So yeah… I do have MySpace and Facebook accounts that I hardly pay attention to these days. Though I must say that I was impressed with how much easier it is to connect with old friends via Facebook. But it (Facebook) really is a huge carnival with all the applications… and the cuteness factor eventually wanes into annoyance for me after a while. For the most part I send out bulletins if there is some event that I’m involved in. I keep them and check on them every once in a while and mostly use them as marketing tools. Oh, I think this video really speaks to me on the annoyance of Facebook. LOL!

That’s it for now. Perhaps there will be more later. Cheers!

Da Count – recognizing the signs

21 Mar

I’ll be meandering somewhat for this week’s count… but indulge me for a bit and perhaps I’ll arrive at a point.

dacount A mother can glance at her child (who to the outside world seems normal) and know something is amiss. Dark clouds rolling in the sky warns of a coming storm. Some are more obvious than others as these two examples illustrate. Yet there are many in our daily lives that we choose to ignore for one reason or another… and then are surprised to be side-swiped when whatever hits.

rsausssie.jpgSure, this journey through life would be so much easier to navigate if someone would have just installed signs along the path. Though if someone else had installed them would this life really belong to us? Even as children we were pretty savvy about recognizing signs that would bring us reward or punishment. The glint in the eye, the frown on the brow, the tone of voice… all provided clues as to what fate lay ahead for us.

rsnavigation.jpgSome may challenge my argument that signs were more straight forward back then than they are now. Perhaps they were or perhaps we were more honest (especially with ourselves) back then. Maybe the confusion began in the brain damaged years of our adolescence when a combination of mixed messages and absolutes ruled our lives. Of course, total block-out of the common sense gene didn’t help matters any either. Life got “so complex” because we insisted on running around in circles despite the fact that the answers were under our very noses all along.

rslife_after_death.jpgFor many of us it took weathering through our twenties before we released our grip on the flawed idealisms we nurtured (or just plain made up) in our teens. Others have never let go and still live with a myriad of absolutes then continue to protest loudly when they tumble into the same ditch over and over again. All these situations fall into the interpersonal realm whether it be in dealings at work, romance or general socialization. Ironically, these people are often the same “experts” at pointing out signs to others while refusing to acknowledge their own. Then there are others who didn’t read the signs… fell and were so traumatized by the experience they deny themselves, refuse to move further down the road out of fear and choose to play the blame game instead.

fuckingsign.jpg So, how does all this relate to Da Count, lecram? Well, at various points in my life I have been the individual in all the situations described above. One cannot hope to move forward if one refuses to acknowledge with brutal honesty one’s own pitfalls and be prepared to make the necessary adjustments. Will I miss a future sign up ahead and falter? Probably. But for now I can say with some confidence that I am able to recognize most of the signs that I was blind to in my past and even decipher the meanings of new ones I encounter… whether they are signs of warnings or opportunities and choose to act upon them. I think for now that counts for something.

To find out what Da Count is all about… click the flashing sign above.

(BTW… apparently many of these signs in the pics posted actually exist.)

I may be google eyed…

19 Mar

… between web work and video editing that I’m planning today. Not in a bad way though. They both fall into the creative realm and requires obsessive focus… so it feeds into my nature quite well.

beerontable.jpg

  • On the video front… I attended a rehearsal of Theatre Ventoux’s production of “Lear” last night. Yes, I was there on a shoot for a promo video I was commissioned to do. (Hopefully, you’ll be able to see it here later today or tomorrow.) As I went about shooting while they rehearsed Act 1, I noted how comfortable the players were this time out. This is the new company’s third production and it is evident that a lot of the “formality” that existed in in their first two productions has given way to an easier trust among the actors. (Many are by now much more at ease with each other as well as the company’s style and process.) This in turn seemed to raise the performance levels all around. It speaks well for the show because any production of Shakespeare (“Lear” especially so… adapted or not) provides an automatic built in challenge for an audience. Unless one has weathered through a generous portion of living out a few hubris induced regrets it is really tough to connect to, be compelled (and empathize with) the title character. (Seriously, the old man’s monumental fuck up early in the play sets in motion a lofty fall into a dark madness for the rest of the of it – by any stretch a tough sell on the empathy scale to an audience.) It is one of the last plays (that we know of) the Bard wrote and presumably a subject he (as many of us getting older) knew a bit about. So, the gateway to audience engagement has to begin with a strong performance level in my humble opinion – and what I witnessed last night seems to be cutting a path in that direction.
  • On the web work front… I’m building sites for a Violin Camp out of the New Jersey area plus a site for an actor friend. Added to that I’m sprucing up some of the many sites that I have direct professional and personal ties to. I have to also develop a more assertive marketing thrust to my various business concerns. Yeah, be assured that you will be boringly updated as these roll out.
  • After the shoot last night I ventured out with Solitaire (who was my lovely shooting assistant) for a spot of dinner. We stayed out a little later than anticipated engaged in some sparkling conversation with some others we met. I will say that it was a refreshing change from my usual hermitizing.
  • The third anniversary of HNT is coming up. Now that my busy time is a little less busy I just may throw my hat into the ring again… at least once in a while. Though I’m not sure if I’m posting anything for this week. I’ll have to gauge as the day unfolds if a bolt of inspiration strikes and I have the time to get into that loop with any level of creativity. Who knows… perhaps in the weeks to come I’ll crank out a new epic on a scale that I was known for some time ago. Let’s see if I can come up with a concept and partners in crime for that.

Now to start my work day and hopefully I’ll be google eyed with a sense of accomplishment by the end of the day. And if that does happen I will reward myself with a couple of cold beers. Have a great Hump Day y’all!
