how did we forget the poop?

31 May

crapper-2Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it’s mistakes. We’ve all heard that one, right? Well, perhaps we should also remember the achievements as well. Like the crapper.

Some of you know I can be quite the documentary nerd. Throw in history, some archeology and I will be an attentive viewer. In my viewing adventures of several ancient civilization of late one thing struck me. Throughout time… at various periods and in different areas of the world basic sanitation and the disposal of waste (particularly of the human ilk) has always been factored into the design of abodes somehow.

Some of the earliest examples have been discovered from ancient civilizations from the Indus Valley. There have also been evidence of pretty sophisticated organized disposal systems from newly discovered settlement sites from pre-history Britain. Yet, (for whatever reason) when those civilizations declined… there seems to be no evidence of effective poop removal. It’s as if everyone collectively got stupid and just crapped anywhere they felt like. (One would think that several outbreaks of the plague would have clued someone to this problem.)

Seriously, basic sanitation only came back into “vogue” in what… like the eighteen hundreds? (Yes, yes… it bears mentioning that what we take for granted today was invented by one Thomas Crapper. In fact, the picture is one of his creations. Beauty, eh?) According to history the Romans were the last ones who had any form of organized waste disposal before that. So the art of flushing poop away was lost for a thousand years? (Along with the recipe for concrete that can be set underwater… but that’s another story altogether.)

So the question that forms the title to this post has to be asked… don’t you think? Were people too busy to remember the poop? Perhaps there wasn’t a need because they were soiling their garments from the fear of being pillaged, unreasonable taxes by a feudal lord, an upcoming inquisition hearing, etc… any form of strife that was prevalent at the time. Really… how can you forget the poop for a thousand or more years? I find that both scary and befuddling.

So, let this be a warning. Once the crappers disappear… that will be the dawning of the new dark ages… so, watch where you step.

yeah, yeah… o.k. I confess…

30 May

… I snuck over to the official Britains Got Talent site and watched the snippets of the finals there this afternoon. But I will only share my impressions AFTER I watch the entire thing.  By now you know that Susan Boyle came in runner=up to Diversity. Of course all the headlines are going to Boyle… and arguably she will make more money in the end than the winning hip-hop dance group. Still… I can’t wait for the entire program to be uploaded to watch it.

So, after I watch it all I will post an update here.

EDIT: Just got done watching the entire thing. I’ll say it again… I do rather like Britains Got Talent. I think perhaps because at the end of the day there is a good natured can-do sensibility about it. That is what makes compelling television for me.

This year the dance groups that made it into the final (both were stellar) had a freshness about them and their routines. Both took established forms and seemed to retool those into something quite new and dynamic. The singers unabashedly dipped into song treasures of the past to showcase their abilities. Even the younger generation was not stifled by the instinctual chauvinism of “having to performing the latest thing” opting instead (thus acknowledging) that good is good no matter what era it came from. Overall, even those who went for the razzmatazz did so without sacrificing sincerity and a healthy dollop of fun. For me the absence of trying to be “terminally hip” is what ultimately makes the English version stand out over the American counterpart.

Well, that’s done for the year. Now back to life.

EDIT: It saddened me to read THIS.

proof that Simon has a heart

30 May

WATCH… Holly half-way through this segment of semi-final 5. Then WATCH how she comes back.

The finals are going on at this very moment. You can (if you so desire) spoil it for yourself at the OFFICIAL SITE in an hour or two. I am opting to wait until THIS USER uploads the whole thing.

this one was the first of the 4…

29 May

… semi finals of Britains Got Talent that I was pleasantly surprised with. Probably because I wasn’t really rooting for any of the acts in this particular bundle. For full videos of the show check out THIS USER.

Overall I felt there was more heart and sincerity with the performances all round.  THIS CONTESTANT was a fun delight and seriously would make a great Mowgli. (OK… maybe after his voice does it’s complete change.) For the “heartstring factor” THIS grandfather and his granddaughter did better than I thought… more heart than talent… but hey… that’s OK.  Anyway, HERE is recap of the semi-final from the official site.

One more semi final before the finals on Saturday.

Da Count – air conditioning

28 May

dacountThe day started off warm… and I was up at 6 AM. By 10 AM it the temps were already hovering around 80 degrees. My friend, Bruce came by at 10:30 and the air-conditioning went on soon after in the office. The higher humidity just spurred me into clicking on the unit earlier than I usually do.

air-conditioningBruce was here to help get the air-conditioning going in the main house… which he did. This way Mum would reap the benefit of it. (The one in the house has been out for about a week… but today it was especially needed.)

I want to personally thank the inventor/s of this heat exchange contraption for the comfort it brings on sweltering days like these. Your invention (which you can read about HERE) is certainly a huge count to me especially in the days to come.

BTW… click the pic to go to it’s source page.

fueling up in the morning…

28 May

sf509d… has never really been a part of my day for a very long time. A cup of java doesn’t count. I’m talking about the full on breakfast with starch and grease here. I think the last regular period in which I actively partook in this daily ritual was perhaps when I was still in high school. Ever since I have been more prone to the brunch.

Every once in a while I will… like today. Doing so today makes me wonder if I should once again jump back onto the toast and egg wagon. Not that I had any of that this morning… opting instead for rice and sambal. After cooking and eating it last night I craved it this morning.

Now this is something a few of my American friends have razzed me about… “Dude, rice for breakfast?!” That is until I point out that rice is a grain as most cereals are. Sometimes (but not too often) I also like to point out how healthy the “junk”/ street food (or as my Mum would call it… trash) I grew up with was actually nutritious. Then they usually shut up and move on to some other topic.

Another one I encounter on a regular basis is tofu (or Tow Foo if you are so inclined). “Dude, there is something wrong with that stuff!” In my travels some kind of food that people make fun of usually stems from either…

1. They have never tried it.

2. It is associated with a (perceived) weird group of people… i.e. hippies, touchy feelie new agers…

3. When they did try it… it just wasn’t prepared right.

Of the three I will give the third category the benefit of the doubt (and respect)… simply because at least they were willing to try something new. If you try it and don’t like it… that’s valid. Though it is this same group that may be willing to give it another go… and discover (to their delight) that when prepared differently (from their first experience) they may actually like it. Not always… but more often than not. And if they still don’t like it… I will give them kudos on their adventurous spirit.

So, why is it when people find some cultural difference that even inquiring about it is tainted with a mocking or incredulous tone? (Mind you, I have found this trait predominantly in those who claim an open mind.) How can one hope to expand one’s horizons by employing a technique that brings up an instant wall? Don’t knock it till you try it… has always been my attitude. Otherwise you will always be left holding an uninformed opinion.

when I feel like cooking…

27 May

cookingtools… 2 thing are prevalent.

1. I’m hungry

2. Things are back to normal.

Tonight I cooked. A simple meal. Steamed rice topped with a tofu sambal and sliced cucumber on the side. It was good. OK… it was better than good. It was bliss. Perhaps because I was hungry. Nevertheless, I think it is safe to say that normal is back. Maybe a new normal though.

ON ANOTHER TANGENT

I’ve sort of organized (gasp) my blogroll. (Yeah, big woop dee doo, huh?)

Not much else to say… perhaps in the AM.

now… back to…

26 May

sf509b… the new regular programing. After a great hiatus and a pleasant weekend the Daily 90′s begin again along with all else that has to be done. Plus, with the temperature rising the shift is to get as many physical duties accomplished before noon… leaving the afternoons for more cerebral and intellectual pursuits. I do believe gears have shifted and it’s time to roll.

On… Britains Got Talent

I watched the second semi-final and generally agree about the groups that have placed in the final so far. Though I do have to say that this year (so far) I have preferred the audition shows better. Apart from the 2 dance groups that have gotten through… I don’t think the rest were at their best. Performances just felt a little lackluster and with less heart. But you can decide for yourself by checking out the shows THIS USER has uploaded.

THIS COULD BE A ROLLING POST

… so there could very well be updates as the day moves on.

watched most of the first semi-final…

25 May

… of Britains Got Talent last night… and the rest this morning. Susan Boyle got off to a shaky start but managed to secure the audience vote for the final… so did dance group Diversity. Once again I relied on THIS USER to upload the entire program. The second semi-final is tonight.

OK… now the chores. If I have something else half way interesting… I’ll post an update here.

ok… I nearly forgot…

24 May

… to watch Episode 7 of Britains Got Talent early this morning… but I’ve since remedied that. If you click the link and click the plus sign (+) in the video thumbnails you can create a “quicklist” so each 10 minute segment of the entire program plays one after the other. Find out which 40 of the over 200 who “got through” are in the semi-finals… which starts tonight. Yes, I’ll be waiting in anticipation for THIS USER to upload segments to watch.

There may be more updates to this post as the day wears on… including pics of the first pickin’s o produce from my vege-bed.

EDIT: noon

I’ve often said that I’m really accomodating and come in two different sizes but little did you know…

524l

The one on the left is a papaya pear squash and to the right is an 8 ball squash… both picked this morning.

Now… for nights at the Starline Grill, birthday parties, toastadas, vegetables and block sales… (click thumbnails for bigger views.
