O.K. Fresno… no one is talking about it…

31 Aug

condonglass… and I think it is something that needs to be talked about. Humidity levels. And if anyone is talking about it the topic is usually broached in hushed tones… like some dirty little secret. Is it just me or have the levels over the last few Summers been higher (like, WAY higher) than “normal”. Seriously, this is important stuff. For one… it totally takes away the claim that it is “a dry heat”. That used to be our claim to fame lo these many years. Who or what is stealing that away from us?

When I first arrived in 1980 part of the promotional material (if you can call it that) was the humidity levels averaged between 10 – 15 percent. Have you checked the levels today? 35 percent! For a few days last week it was hovering around 68 percent! WTF? (No, I do not check it everyday… but I can safely say the levels have NOT been between 10-15 percent for most of this season… or the last few for that matter. This would be anomaly in the days of old for 2 – 3 days in the Summer. Not any more.  Now it seems to be a constant for most of the Summer season.

Even the claim that “Fresno Summer nights are great” cannot be made with confidence anymore. It has since been replaced with “Let’s see what the night brings?”  With the humidity hanging like a 3 day old dead rodent the air doesn’t cool as fast as it used to. For instance, I left Veni’s a few nights ago at around 10 PM and the temps were still at 90 degrees!

Has the out of control sprawl (with extra asphalt and sprinkler systems) added to the humidity levels? Is it some global climate phenomenon? Apart from my body (which was born and bred in a high humidity equatorial climate) as a gauge… the other evidence includes “sweating” glasses of iced cold drinks and dripping window unit air-conditioners. That kind of condensation doesn’t happen in a dry climate, yo! (There’s your scientific component to this topic.)  And what does that do for swamp cooler sales?

And let’s not just talk about it… let’s do something about it if possible. I mean, seriously… this stuff is heavy… like the air we’ve had to live in of late.

EDIT: I was talking about this the other day and a friend responded with a blase. “So what?” Well, climate affects everything… from the things we grow and eat (yeah, some crops do not take well to humidity) to event planning. Even if it is just to go out for dinner… sweltering in an open air patio is not that much fun. So, it does affect business in more ways than one.

Da Count – Ted

30 Aug

dacountWhether one agreed with his politics or not here was a man who kept going with gusto… in his life, in his work and with his family until the end. That example (for me) is worth the count this week.

I may have to learn or at least re-learn…

27 Aug

0… how to be around people again. Of late I have noticed that I get rattled when I am in a place with more than 10 people in it. This never used to be an issue. In the past I was always around people. I would even go so far to say that I thrived on the energy of a crowd.

Perhaps the last couple of years of not socializing as much as I used to has made me a bit of a recluse. I suppose that’s natural. Afterall, one does become conditioned to different environments.

The thing is I’m not easily rattled… especially over something as minor as watching a play in a theater with 90 other people. But it somehow got to me.

Curious.

I do not like watching floundering…

26 Aug

escher_sphere… especially when it involves people I know. There are times when I will step in and offer to assist in any way I can. But sometimes one just has to hang back and acknowledge that it (the floundering) is an essential part of the growing process. At least it was for me.

Very early in my life I was encouraged (and required) to not only find solutions to challenges but to also act upon them. (Yes, for the most part everyone knows the answers but people tend to conveniently forget the “acting upon” part.) This in turn cultivated an interest in how things worked. The number of gadgets… especially old wind-up clocks opened up and strewn about my room as a child was evidence to that.

When I got older the curiosity transferred to guessing how people ticked. I’ll be the first to admit that this was inherited from my father who had the uncanny ability size up an individual with great accuracy with a “once over.” This is something I found extermely useful when I was creating characters as a playwright. (Here’s an old cocktail to creating a character… start with 1 strength, 1 failing and one quirk… then plonk them into a potentially devastating situation… stir… now see which of the three elements will fight to rise.)

The point being… no matter how great the individual may seem… they are only human. There are times when one of those 3 elements will rule and one (meaning you, me, us…) has to take that into account. But is also true that all 3 will be visible upon the first meeting… if you know what to look for.

But even in the practical world this has come in very useful. This unromanticized acknowledgment that everyone is unique and worked in different ways but was also totally human with their own needs and failings helped steer me away from many potential unpleasant experiences. (Ya know when your parents used to nag you about spotting trouble and steering clear of it… this is what they meant.) More importantly it gives us pause to remind ourselves that we too are all too human and perhaps ponder our own natures and how we can improve it.

Which brings us back to floundering. Do I see a way out and up? Yes… I think (actually I’m pretty sure) they see it too. Acting upon it is totally within their sphere of possibility to actualize. My hope is they will.

not much of a post today…

still thinking about it…

24 Aug

… Memory Monday (or the return of Picture Daze) that I suggested a few posts ago. I’m a little ambivalent at the moment. A part of me wants to dive into it but another part is feeling… well, lazy. Let me think on this some more.

This wasn’t the weekend I thought I would have. Saturday I continued sorting out stuff from the office. Sunday I decided on cleaning out the truck. This included cleaning off water spots that have been encrusted in my windshield for years. I even turned down invitations to some fun activities in lieu of staying around the homestead. (What?! I know!) Not that any of this constituted a bad weekend… just not one that I had anticipated. Though I am glad that things got done.

I did get to watch some biographical documentaries on David Lynch, John Lennon, Mary Magdalene and Les Paul. I’m the first to admit that it’s a quirky line-up… but hey, I had fun watching them. Most of them came to me via streaming from netflix… however, for those of you here in the US… you may want to click on the graphic below for a free direct stream of “Les Paul: Chasing Sound” from Hulu.

lespaul

It’s a really good watch… of course, it was made for the American Masters series for PBS. And don’t let the end of the program fool you… there is an extra of live performances. Let me apologize to those of you who are outside the US that this is not available for viewing. Though I’m sure you could find a way to mask your IP so you can watch it. ;)

My coffee is nearly done. Off to (hopefully) accomplish… something. Hope you are all having a great start of the week. Cheers!

I started a project yesterday…

22 Aug

… and as a result the office is now livable again. It was a slow start (with 20 minutes of work and 10 of sitting periods) but gained momentum as the day progressed. There is still some sorting to complete today but the bulk is done.

I was thinking about my current modus operandi and compared it to how I use to do things in previous lifetimes. There was a time I would dive head first with the fervor of an adolescent in heat.  This was especially true with projects of the creative ilk. Time dissipated and all that mattered was cranking out the project. How different it is now.

Sure, I used to enjoy the explosion of activity that was but I am also enjoying this new process. A friend asked me if I missed how I got things done. I have to say… not really… as long as it gets done. I’ll have you know this post was written in one of those relaxing 10 minute blocks.

Back to sorting… and wishing the lot of you a good weekend. To my Muslim friends out there… Selamat Berpuasa!

Da Count – the truck is legal and running again

21 Aug

dacountEven though I got an early start on all things truck today (Thurs.) I spent the rest of the day dreading that it wouldn’t be until Monday that the “great truck saga of 2009″ would be complete. So, for the rest of the day I busied myself with busy-ness… every once in a while pausing to sigh a deep heavy sigh at the thought of this. Then… Lo and behold, the mechanic called at 4:20 to say it had passed smog and was ready to be picked up.

Upon hearing that I dashed out of the house, walked a block (yeah, a good mechanic that close who is reasonable… priceless) paid for the repairs and zoomed over to the DMV with 5 minutes to spare. Bada bing, bada boom… tags on the truck!

:: insert fanfare of victorious trumpets here::

It’s good to have it back on the road. I didn’t realize how much I missed it these last two years. I felt like Sweeney Todd “AT LAST MY ARM IS COMPLETE AGAIN!” Though that metaphor wouldn’t exactly work in this case… but you catch my drift, don’t you? (Don’t you?) Sometimes full appreciation only comes with the re-discovery of something (or someone) that has been absent for a while.

OK… getting it road worthy again did cost more than I had anticipated. There was that small matter of the brakes having to be replaced and all. But, once again I am mobile… and I really need to be right now. Though I still saved a ton of moolah over the last two and a half years of it’s non operation. Besides, I didn’t really need it then… now I do.

So, this week I’m counting that my safe and legal mode of transportation is back in operation… as well as for the kindness of the loan of The Beast by Christine until the Blue Devil was up and running again.

EDIT: This video now becomes apropos I suppose.

off to the DMV…

20 Aug

… to get the truck legal. It’s at the mechanic’s at the moment getting two year old fluids swapped out, tuned up and smogged. Hopefully, by tomorrow (after another visit to the DMV) I will have new tags and it will be running legal.

Last night I was over at the watering hole for one of Fingers B’s birthday celebration. He has several planned this week which will culminate in a big Suicide Lounge show at the brewery. So, looks like his week is set up for him.

Anyway… back to the task at hand. Off to the DMV I will go. But since this is such a short post… here is a video for your entertainment pleasure……..

EDIT:
Just got back from the DMV… and it only took 15 minutes. Come to think of it… I have never really had a long wait at the DMV in all the years I’ve had to go in. I’ve heard horror stories from others though. I like to believe that the mindset going in determines one’s experience… in anything we do.

Also just got the estimate from the mechanic… and it’s higher than I hoped but lower than it could have been. At least by tomorrow it will be up and running… and safe to drive. This makes me more mobile again… so, that’s a plus.

And now… back to the various tasks at hand.
