Da Count – things that make me smile

30 May

dacount This video for instance. Perhaps because I know Baba who has performed at the Rogue on several occasions and am glad that he is getting this level of national media exposure. Perhaps the show that the song is from received its North American Premier at the Rogue in 2009. It’s all good. Enjoy.

juggling one handed in slow motion

27 May

That’s what I have been doing for the last few months… or at least it sure feels that way. It’s not a complaint… merely an observation. I fully appreciate the ebb and flow of life and this is most definitely a case of the latter. Where ebbs go it really not a bad one… just feels a little too sedentary for my liking.

Yet, in an odd way the glow of promise up ahead seems more radiant than it has been for a while. Its not like I’ve been shuffling in a stupor all this time (OK… maybe some) but stuff is getting done. Admittedly at a somewhat laid back pace but the pile of accomplishments do seem to be growing. Mostly little “fix-its” around the homestead… and doing so only inspires more ambitious projects down the line.

The ideal of course is to attempt straddling the “catch-up” pile and the “forge ahead” one simultaneously. A tricky proposition at best and a dodgy one at worst. Staying exclusively on either one only gives rise to the frustration from the “one step forward and two steps back” syndrome. I would rather be heading somewhere than nowhere… so, for now I will take a page from the tortoise and work the slow and steady ethos.

Here is hoping that this Thursday is a rewarding one for all of us.

I’m now a promo picture?

25 May

Yeah, apparently I am… at least on the London Fringe site. What next? Me in garter-belt and stilettos? LOL! Tommy (aka The Rev) sent the link to me today. The pic was engineered by Barry Smith, another Rogue performer who was here for this year’s fest. I have to admit that this actually perked up my morning. OK, if you must know… I am easily perked.

Had a great chat & dinner with a couple of friends last night in the driveway. This is something that I love doing and haven’t done in a while. Sitting under the stars on a Fresno night and just shooting the shit as it were. Something I hope to do a lot more again.

Slowly getting things done around the homestead… emphasis on “slowly”. Though it is getting done. Still not where I want to be in the comfort department (translated: income stream) but it will get there. Though I am not allowing that little detail to be a cloud of an excuse to not get things done. Some days I move faster and on others I roll like a stream of molasses. But it is all forward motion, isn’t it?

Anyway, it is time to hang the laundry and contemplate what is on the menu today. Cheers and have a great one.

a lazy Monday…

24 May

… not that it means there is nothing to do. There is tons… just that I’m being selective and trying not to get all flummoxed about “having to”.

The yard sale went OK on Saturday. Didn’t reap (money-wise) what I had hoped for but the company was fun. More friends came by than for the last two and their company made it more of a social event.

The downside was being outdoor for an extended amount of time with the breeze carrying pollen. The result… allergy attack in the evening that curbed me going out for a bbq over at APJ’s. Oh well… guess that’s how it rolls sometimes.

This meant that “do nothing Saturdays” rolled over to Sunday. Nothing much to report there. I just watched a lot of “extras” from early James Bond movies.

Hope everyone is having a good start to the week.

Da Count – current treats

21 May

dacountPart and parcel of living “in the present” (at least for me) is keeping connected with the past. Especially with those things that were once sources of delight. Mine are mainly food based. LOL. As such, I cook (dishes I love) not to remind me of what was but more as a continuum. This hardly detracts me from experiencing the new… in fact, it only enhances it.

It has everything to do with the culture we grew up with. No matter where you come from our culture-centric upbringing does shape and provide us with our unique make up. Values, taste and perception are shaped in our formative years only to be expanded upon as we saunter on this path of life.

Last Summer I came across coconut juice in a can from the local 99 cent store (incidentally one of my favorite places to shop) that I decided to take a chance on. Over the years I have come across coconut juice at various Asian stores. Some were better than others but the price was always a factor. This particular find was actually good and priced right.

Let me say there is still nothing that compares to drinking it fresh out of the nut on a hot day. Still this is the next best thing. Yes, when I drink it, I do recall sitting on a beach in Malaysia under the shade of a tree soaking in the delight of just being there. But I also fully take in the delight of soaking in my present… and the fact that I can enjoy the moments that I am currently living.

Sometimes those things that trigger what was, is essential to appreciating how far we have come. So, in a funny way having this little treat now is not so much about reminiscing about what was, but celebrating the availability of a delight I was introduced to at a young age… now. And now is where it is at. Part of that delight is introducing something as simple as a taste that may be foreign to some of my friends and watching their delight of the first time… and in so creating new moments in the present.

So, this is my count this week. Enjoying what is from a familiar past and savoring the present. Now to head to the store and restock on more cans.

Cheers and have a wonderful weekend.

Happy 5th Anniversary HNT!

19 May

First, MEGA CONGRATS to the Mighty Os on starting and keeping this going all these years. For myself HNT became not only an outlet for creativity but also an opportunity to connect with other bloggers… many who have since become friends.

I do try to participate every once in a while and the annual “Sarong To Summer” is always a must do in my book.

As my participation grew (in the early days) I sort of garnered the reputation for posting the “epic HNTs” which were a lot of fun to do. My first posting (below) featured my left arm, Jimmy… who down the line starred in HIS VERY OWN EPIC HNT. Click the pics for bigger versions.

I know today’s assignment was to also recreate the very first one but time got away from me. But here is…

My first Half-Nekkid Thursday

from 04 Aug 2005

Let me introduce you to Jimmy. Jimmy is my left hand. Jimmy was a victim of Mr. Polio when I was 4 and a half months old. Actually, half my body was affected but Mr. Polio only left one defect… Jimmy. It was my parents who named him. (The right hand is Audrey.) I have other body parts with names butthatsanotherstorynevermindanyway… I thought Jimmy was the perfect subject for my first Half-Nikked Thursday.

Over the years Jimmy and I have heard it all: cripple, one-arm bandit, handicap, disabled, etc. I prefer “inconvenienced.” It seems a lot more appropriate … at least for me. Thanks to my upbringing my parents set me on the path of independence from the “git go.” For this I thank them.

Most people who meet me hardly notice Jimmy… and when they do they are all beside themselves apologizing for not noticing in the first place. It usually happens when Jimmy takes on a strange pose (like in the picture) and they freak. Then they suddenly look at Audrey and the obvious difference in size and ability between the 2 hands.

Most Popular Question: Can he feel anything?
Answer: You Betcha!

Over the years I have noticed that beautiful women like to hold, fondle and play with Jimmy. Jimmy has been a wonderful asset… and not just with the women. Jimmy has allowed me to explore abilities that I may not have considered if I was completely able-bodied. I sometimes say “If you want to find the easy way to do something… just ask the cripple guy.”

As always… Cheers and Happy HNT!

closed and done

the show, that is.

My reactions? All in all I thought it was a good product. Both were thematically tied and well executed with simplicity.

The audiences we had were fab but we could have had more. It certainly wasn’t from the lack of promotion. May is just tough around these parts. That coupled with da Big No’s propensity for lastminute-itist sort of determined that only half the potential audience that we should have got turned up.

Never the less, I was pleased with what was. Now on to other endeavors… some creative and some practical. Here are some pics from closing night.

Da Count – our last weekend

14 May

dacountYep, 2 more shows to go before we close. I’m glad I did it for a myriad of reasons. Doing it was part of my bounce back. I got to retool the show… though I’m still not taking it on tour as some have suggested.

Good but small audiences so far. The next couple of performances hold the promise of a bigger house. And once it is all done I will probably not be on stage for a long while. Of course, I will hear the lamentations of “sorry I missed it_____(insert standard excuse here)_____”. Tough. LOL. That’s how it goes.

For my part… I had a good time. I got to flex some muscles that I haven’t in quite a while. I got to learn… that’s key. I always try to do that (learn, that is) with whatever I undertake. On this endeavor the exercise was part “review” and part “further enhancement” to the knowledge base.

So, that is my count this week. The good part of this being the last 2 performances is that I will then dive into new projects. That is always exciting.

2 more shows. Come pack the house.

Here are the details:

This is a joint production between KP Actors Gym & Theatre J’Nerique and will be presented at Fresno’s newest performance venue THE BROKEN LEG STAGE, 1470 N. Van Ness Ave.

“Pho For The Soul” runs May 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, & 15

$11 at the door.
Advanced tickets for Fri. & Sat. shows will be available from brownpapertickets.com http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/108945

Doors will open at 7:15 P.M.

come to the show, dammit!

11 May

We have 3 performances left. The first 3 went well and we totally appreciate the audiences who turned up for those performances. Sure, when we first decided to do the show and scheduled it we knew we were up against a lot – the month of May is jammed packed around these here parts. But come on Fresno… really? This is a city of over half a million.

Top 10 reasons to attend “Pho For The Soul”.

10. It is a good show.
9. Watch KP dance.
8. Watch KP sing a “story song”.
7. I’m on stage. (This is a rarity, yo!)
6. Come see how we include “fun with your cellphone” in our show.
5. Taste & Toast of the Tower is on Thursday… get lubed then turn up. It’ll be fun… you’ll see.
4. Suicide Lounge plays a “Pay What You Want” after-party post performance on Saturday.
3. Folk are flying in from all over the country to see it. What is your excuse?
2. It is the kind of show that is not done in this town that often.
1. We don’t get naked… though that is not a guarantee that we won’t.

dagnabbit! we were NOT censored after all!

09 May

Well, at least there was a little controversy over this video before the festival. I so wanted to add the words “directors cut” for this video. We nearly staged a walk-out because we were NOT censored. Oh well.
